Teachers often ask that an SLD student be given more time in Learning Lab.

A child who is one or more years below grade level in all subjects should receive small group instruction in those subjects. This time is carefully planned with specific goals, assessments, and time and place designations on the student's Individual Educational Plan. The IEP is written, reviewed, and signed by parents, Classroom teacher, Exceptional Ed teacher, psychologist, Staffing Coordinator, and other involved individuals.

While a student may have high needs academically, he/she also has an important need to be involved with the peer group in the classroom for socialization and exposure to grade level curriculum. This falls under the umbrella of “Least Restrictive Environment.”

Now for the challenge ! The student is in the classroom during a part of the reading or math block. How do you meet the needs of a class of 25 or so and also reach this student on his level? ( As with so many things in education, we know the philosophy - but implementation is a feat for Cirque de Soleil!)

This is where your Differentiated Curriculum comes in to the act!
1. Menu of Learning Styles & Strategies
2. Skills from previous grade levels
3. Student's Current Performance Level

Take these elements and implement them with established routines and centers.

Model independent use and have a buddy for assistance, if needed.

Centers Ideas:
Language Master vocabulary or fact review
Books on tape with drawing or graphic response
Computer games (Reader Rabbit, etc.)
Folder activities
Skills puzzles
Cut and Paste, reinforcement skills worksheet

We are the Educational Cirque de Soleil - creative, highly skilled in balancing acts, and successful in our endeavors!
